Discover the story of the wreck of The Prince Maurice on Thursday, May 16 at 1pm. On March 8, 1657, as a Nor'easter raged, a Dutch ship, The Prince Maurice, slammed into the coast of Fire Island. Aboard were 129 souls. Ashore were Indigenous people on their coastal night watch.
The New Amsterdam History Center's Mapping Early NY project uncovered correspondence and ship manifests to pinpoint the shipwreck, and tell the story of the rescue on an ice laden beach. Richly illustrated with 3D models, interactive maps, and documents, the one-hour talk, followed by a Q & A is free of charge, but reservations are required. Click here to sign up. |
Support the Shelter Island Historical Society's Annual Summer Musical! Since 2021, our annual summer musical has played a pivotal role in embodying the essence of Shelter Island's rich history. This year, in “A Deck of Ferry Tales,” we are thrilled to bring you the captivating stories of the "Shelter Island Ferry Company." To continue to produce the musical each summer, we depend on the support of our community. This summer, we hope that we can depend on your contribution in order to bring another great show to our stage at the Historical Society!
