The Living History Project was conceived as a way to document the Shelter Island of today and bring it forward into the future. The Project’s focus is to document lives on Shelter Island over time. It began with interviews of Shelter Island High School students reflecting about growing up here and questioned them about their hopes for their futures, the challenges they expect to face, and the challenges/advantages they had living in such a unique community.
The first interviews were recorded in 2017, with the goal of following these students over the years and interviewing them again at important stages of their lives, such as college graduation, marriage, and the birth of a child. Initially organized and staffed by Julia Labrozzi, at the time a High School senior, the Project has grown to include Islanders of all ages and from all walks of life. The Project seeks to record the rich fabric of Island life, past and present, so that we have a record of today to share with generations in the future. The Living History Project Committee, a sub-committee of the Education Committee, guides the Project. The Education Committee's mission is to provide historical resources and educate Shelter Islanders and the public at large about the history and culture of Shelter Island. |
The Project welcomes volunteers who wish to help us with our work. If you are interested, please contact the Shelter Island Historical Society at (631) 749-0025 or email livinghistory@shelterislandhistorical.org.
