The Living History Project started in 2017 with the goal of documenting the lives of Shelter Island residents. Thanks to initial funding from All For The East End (AFTEE), The Shelter Island Education Foundation (SIEF), and the Suffolk County Parks and Recreation Department, the Project purchased video and audio equipment and began a series of interviews with Shelter Island high school students that touched upon their experiences growing up in our unique Island community.
Thanks to a generous grant from the Senior Citizens Foundation of Shelter Island (SCF), the Project has expanded to include Islanders of all ages and backgrounds, creating a chronicle of the rich fabric of Island life, past and present, to share with future generations.
Since its inception, we have conducted numerous interviews which are archived at the Historical Society and available for family members, researchers, and other interested parties.
The Living History Project is managed by volunteer professionals: film editor Martin Levenstein, cinematographer Steve Kazmierski, and journalists Charity Robey and Tim Purtell.
