connecting from a quarantine kitchen: my shelter island pandemic story
by jacquelyn a. ottman, with contributions by karen kiaer

Connecting from a Quarantine Kitchen documents Jacquelyn Ottman’s personal experience and insights into cooking while sheltering in place during the first sixty days of the Covid-19 pandemic at the home of Karen Kiaer, a local artist and longstanding Shelter Island resident.
Compiled by Ottman, a home cook, food waste expert and culinary historian, it visually documents nearly all meals prepared by Ottman and Kiaer during the sixty days between March 17 and May 21, 2020. It is supplemented by ten pages of insights about the experience of finding connection, comfort, joy and creativity in the kitchen during this challenging time. It also includes the full text of their “Leave it to Leftovers: Tasty Meals During the Pandemic” article published in the Shelter Island Reporter on May 4.
Prompted by a public request for submissions of pandemic stories by the Shelter Island History Museum, it gives readers a sense of what life was like for residents and home cooks on the Island during this time, including the availability of food in local markets.
