The shelter island history project: "the story of shelter island"

“The Story of Shelter Island” History Project is a partnership with the Shelter Island Historical Society and its Education Committee, and the Shelter Island Union Free School District in an effort to share the Island’s history with the Island’s school children. All programming has been created to work with the NYS Standards so that our lessons can fit seamlessly into any teacher's lesson. “The Story of Shelter Island” is being supported with a grant from the Shelter Island Educational Foundation and the Elizabeth Pedersen Education Fund.

Our goal is to use our archives and collection to augment the resources available to teachers and to expand students’ exposure and availability to prime source materials, while helping students learn about the history (stories) of their family, and community, and nourishing the unique heritage of our special island. Each grade level program will be based on local knowledge, will expose children to actual historic materials, artifacts, sometimes people, and will involve an active learning experience.
