11. Original Bedroom
The glass in the front window of this room is very old, if not original, based on the evidence of  imperfections in the glass. To make handmade glass, silica is combined with chemicals and heated, then dropped on a table and rolled out like pie crust. In old glass, little grains of sand and air bubbles show up as imperfections. It wasn’t until the late 1800s that glass started to be manufactured due to the invention of heat rollers that allowed for evenness and eliminated the flaws. These glass windows are not the same thickness in every corner,  but they are close.

This room was very likely another bedroom. James and Elizabeth Bowditch Havens had 11 children and surely needed all the sleeping space they could find. You can also watch a video about James Havens below or on our youtube page.
