The tapestry entitled “1652-Traces of Care”, by renowned fiber artist Helena Hernmarck, depicts the 1652 Articles of Agreement regarding the early ownership of Shelter Island. The document spells out the division of the land among the four investors (Capt. Thomas Middleton, Mr. Constant Sylvester, Capt. Nathaniel Sylvester, and Ens. John Booth Gives) who had purchased the land from Stephen Goodyear of New Haven, Connecticut. The tapestry is part of the Center’s permanent collection.
If you'd like, you can view the entire document below. It is part of the Dering Document Collection, on permanent loan to the Historical Society, from the Shelter Island Public Library.
